KAREEM WASHINGTON NAMED NEC MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

UMBC junior wing Kareem Washington was named Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced today by the conference.Washington scored 21 of his 23 points in the final 20 minutes as UMBC opened the NEC season with a 68-53 win over Mt. St. Mary's last Thursday. He played just 2 minutes in the first half after picking up 2 quick fouls, but scored UMBC's first six points of the half as the Retrievers built a double-digit lead. He buried a pair of clutch three-point goals to thwart a late Mount rally and tied his career mark of 23 points, set in the opener vs. Towson. The White Plains, New York native is averaging 21.0 ppg (fourth in the NEC) and shooting 54.5% from the floor. He was earlier named Most Valuable Player of the Battle of Baltimore Tournament.
