Men's Basketball Closes 2011 RAC Arena Slate by Hosting Rider on Saturday Evening
Brian Neller needs one 3-point FG to move into 8th place on UMBC's all-time list.
UMBC resumed its series with Rider in 2008-09 when the teams squared off in a BracketBuster game in Lawrenceville, N.J. The two schools will meet for the fourth consecutive year, with the Retrievers searching for their first win in that span. Tip-off time is set for 7:05 p.m. and Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier bring fans all the action on V1370 radio or www.fox1370.com. All UMBC home basketball games are streamed with multiple cameras and play-by-play on www.umbcretrievers.tv.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: After winning at Towson last Saturday, UMBC could not handle the inside-outside attack of Morgan State and fell to the Bears, 73-60, at the RAC Arena on Wednesday. The Retrievers did outrebound the bigger Bears, coming up with 20 offensive caroms, but shot just 31.5 percent from the floor. Four Retrievers managed double figures, led by 16 points from junior guard Brian Neller. UMBC (1-8) is in the midst of its final exam period.
BRONC UPDATE: Rider, which finished 23-11 last year, has dropped six straight and is off to a 1-10 start in 2011-12. The Broncs suffered a heartbreaking 72-71 overtime loss at home to Princeton on Wednesday as PU’s Mack Darrow made a three-point field goal at the buzzer. Junior wing Jonathan Thompson led Rider with 19 points in the contest. Sophomore forward Daniel Stewart leads a balanced Bronc attack with 13.8 points per game.
Who’s Up Next: UMBC travels to Bloomington, Ind. for its first-ever meeting with the Indiana Hoosiers on Thursday, Dec. 22 (6:00 p.m. EST). The game wil be broadcast by ESPN3.
