MEN'S BASKETBALL SEASON OPENS SATURDAY AT BATTLE OF BALTIMORE; LIMITED FREE STUDENT TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW AT THE RAC

11/18/2002

Many questions hover over the 2002-03 UMBC men's basketball squad. Can the backcourt trio of Kareem Washington, Justin Wilson, and Rob Gogerty maintain or even improve upon their level of efficiency from a season ago? Will the frontcourt tandem of Andre Williams, Eugene Young, and Andrew Feeley raise their level of play? How much impact will the freshmen have?Tom Sullivan's team will begin to answer some of those queries this weekend, as UMBC opens the season with a Saturday showdown vs. Towson at the Fifth Annual Battle of Baltimore Tournament. The Retrievers face the Tigers at 7pm, followed by host Morgan State taking on Loyola at 9:15. The consolation game is Monday at 4pm, and the title game follows at 7pm. Saturday's games and Monday's final will be televised by WMAR TV. The Retrievers are two-time defending champions in this event, winning the 2000 title at the RAC Arena, and taking last year's tournament at Loyola. There are a limited number of free student tickets and transportation available for the Battle of Baltimore. Tickets are available at the RAC, Room 331, during normal business hours. Students desiring bus service to Morgan should be at Erickson Hall at 6pm on Saturday. 40 spaces will be available for the bus, on a first-come, first-served basis. A Retriever Basketball T-shirt will also be available for those taking the bus to the game.
