ESTIS, SCHALLER NAMED TO UMBC MEN'S BASKETBALL STAFF
Jeff Estis and John Schaller have been named Assistant Men's Basketball Coaches at UMBC, it was announced today by Head Coach Tom Sullivan. Despite his youth, Jeff Estis brings a tremendous amount of experience to the Retriever bench. The 1994 graduate of the University of Miami (FL) has most recently served as Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Coordinator at Pierce College in Lakewood, Washington. He directed the Raiders to the 2001 NWAACC Crossover Championship, the first in the school's 35-year history. Prior to that, Estis performed as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic University (2000-01), the University of Hawaii-Hilo (1999-00), Brown University (1998-99) and Long Beach State (1996-98). Estis' career was highlighted as an administrative assistant for the 1995-96 Syracuse Orangemen squad that went to the national championship game. He earned a B.S. from Miami in 1994 and an M.S. from Syracuse in 1996 in the field of Communications. Estis' responsibilities will include recruiting, scouting, on-the-floor coaching as well as other administrative duties. Schaller is no stranger to UMBC Basketball. He has spent the last three seasons as the program's Administrative Assistant. Prior to his time at UMBC, Schaller served as an assistant coach at Lincoln Trail (IL) College (1998-99), Lee Scott Academy (AL), Lee County Heat AAU under-17 select team and LaSalle Institute (NY). Schaller is a 1997 graduate of SUNY-Plattsburgh. The Albany, New York native was a member of the 1995 squad, which received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. John's brother, Tom Schaller, Ph.D., teaches Political Science at UMBC.
