Jamar Wertz tied his season-high with 11 points in UMBC's last outing.
UMBC will play its final non-conference contest of the season on Thursday, Dec. 30, as the Retrievers host the Purple Eagles of Niagara University. Fans can catch all the action on Fox 1370 Sports Radio (www.fox1370.com) with Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier on the call, beginning with the pregame show at 6:55 p.m.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: Junior guard Chris De La Rosa (team-high 14.7 ppg) continued his outstanding play with 15 points at Notre Dame, but the Retrievers could not keep up with the 20th-ranked Irish, falling, 93-53, at Purcell Pavilion. De La Rosa is averaging 19.0 points and 7.3 assists per game over his last four outings.
PURPLE EAGLE UPDATE: Niagara, a member of the MAAC, will play its 11th game of 14 on the road in Baltimore. They opened this mid-Atlantic swing with a tough 84-39 loss at Drexel on Tuesday. Senior guard Anthony Nelson led NU with 14 points and averages 16.0 points per outing. Junior forward Kashief Edwards chips in with 13.2 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game. Both UMBC (82-74 at home) and Niagara (74-71 in New Britain) have losses vs. Central Connecticut State earlier this season.
Who’s Up Next: The Retrievers open America East play by hosting Stony Brook on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 5:05 p.m.
UMBC Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown has announced that head men’s basketball coach Randy Monroe has been suspended for one game and will not direct the Retrievers when they host Niagara University on Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
Coach Monroe is being suspended for inappropriate behavior towards game officials during UMBC’s contest at Morgan State on Dec. 18. He was ejected from the game after drawing his second unsportsmanlike technical foul with 7:53 remaining in the second half.
Assistant Coach Aki Thomas will serve as acting head coach for the non-conference contest vs. Niagara.
