Men's Basketball: Gilliam, Satchell Earn America East All-Conference Honors
3/5/2010
West Hartford, Conn.—Sophomore guard Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md./Brewster (N.H.) Academy) earned America East Third Team All-Conference honors, while freshman post Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) was named to the league’s All-Rookie team, it was announced at the conference’s awards reception at the University of Hartford.
Gilliam led the Retrievers in scoring, averaging 13.5 points per game. He was even more proficient in America East Conference play, scoring at a 15.3 points per game clip (sixth in America East), and most proficient in road league games with a 17.6 scoring average. The wing guard also led UMBC in three-point field goals (42), free throws (89) and free throw percentage (80.9%, fourth in America East) and steals (42, 1.5 per game, fifth in America East).
Gilliam enters this weekend’s America East Tournament with a 12-game double-figures scoring streak.
Satchell became UMBC’s second-ever selection to the all-rookie team, joining Jay Greene (2005-06) as the only Retrievers to earn that distinction. He was the lone freshman in the league to start each of his team’s games and was the leading freshman rebounder in America East with 4.8 per game. Satchell averaged 6.0 points per game and was sixth in league games in field goal percentage at 49.0%.
The seventh-seeded Retrievers meet second-seeded Vermont at 6:00 p.m. in the America East quarterfinals on Saturday.
