Brian Neller Named America East Rookie of the Week; Men's Basketball Closes 2009 at Central Connecticut on Wednesday
Cambridge, Mass.—UMBC freshman wing Brian Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was named America East Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie-of-the-Week, the league announced today.
Neller becomes UMBC’s second honoree of the season, as teammate Shawn Grant (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) earned the award on Dec. 7.
Neller hit three of six shots from behind the arc and scored nine points in the Retrievers’ 71-34 setback at Virginia Tech on Dec. 22. He leads the Retrievers with 17 three-point field goals on the season and is averaging 5.6 points per game.
UMBC (1-10) plays its final game of the decade on Wednesday, Dec. 30 when they travel north to take on familiar foe Central Connecticut State (3-6). This will be the 31st meeting between
teams and the series is even at 15-all. Tip-off time is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live by Fox 1370 Sports Radio (www.fox1370.com) with Steve Levy on the call.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: Fourty-eight hours after its first victory of the season, a 59-57 win at American, UMBC ventured into ACC territory and dropped a 71-34 decision at Virginia Tech on Dec. 22. The scoring output for the Retrievers tied its second-lowest of all time and its field goal
percentage of 22.4% (11 of 49) was a school-record low. Robbie Jackson recorded 11 points and three blocked shots for the visitors.
BLUE DEVILS’ UPDATE: Central Connecticut State will play just its second home game of the season against the Retrievers. The Blue Devils nipped Albany, 70-68, in overtime on Dec. 12 in its only other home contest. Sophomore guard Robby Ptacek leads CCSU at 13.6 points per game, while backcourt mate Shemik Thompson is at 12.5 ppg.
UP NEXT: UMBC opens Ameirca East Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Burlington, Vermont to take on the Catamounts. Tip-off time is set for 1:00 p.m.
