Men's Basketball Defeated at George Washington
Washington, D.C.-George Washington (3-0) hit a staggering 21 of 31 first half shots and went on to a 94-51 win over UMBC (0-3) in the Colonialsí home opener.
Freshman wing Shawn Grant (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) was the lone Retriever in double figures with 14 points. Sophomore Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md./Brewster Acad.) and junior Robbie Jackson (Aberdeen, Md./Marshall) had eight each, but Jackson fouled out while playing only 10 minutes.
The Colonials took a 9-0 lead, but a Grant jumper at the 15:36 mark trimmed the deficit to 12-6. After UMBC sophomore guard Chris De La Rosa (Washington Heights, N.Y./Siena) missed a driving layup, the hosts would outscore UMBC, 47-22 over the final 14:45 of the first half. The Colonials scored 19 points off UMBC turnovers and hit 9-of-13 shots from behind the arc.
George Washington led, 59-28, at intermission and UMBC was unable to mount any comeback in the final 20 minutes. The Colonials outrebounded UMBC, 57-27, as foul trouble limited UMBCís frontcourt trio of Jackson, sophomore Jake Wasco (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) and freshman Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) to a total of 31 minutes of action.
GW freshman wing Lasan Kromah led all scorers with 21 points, including 20 in the first half as he hit six of seven shots from behind the arc.
UMBC returns to the court at home on Tuesday, when they entertain Coppin State.
