2009-10 Men's Basketball Non-Conference Schedule
The UMBC men’s basketball team will open its 2009-10 season by hosting 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Morgan State on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 3:30 p.m. at the RAC Arena. The 25th all-time meeting between the Retrievers and the Bears kicks off UMBC’s 13-game non-conference slate.
The Retrievers’ America East schedule will be announced sometime next month.
Three days after UMBC takes on Morgan State, the Retrievers will welcome another local rival, the Loyola Greyhounds to RAC Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m. After a Saturday, Nov. 21 contest at George Washington, Randy Monroe’s young squad will entertain Coppin State on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7:00 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the Retrievers and the Eagles since the 1999-2000 season.
UMBC will also host Rider on Saturday, Dec. 12 and welcome Pennsylvania on Wednesday, Jan. 6. The game against the Quakers will be the first meeting between the two schools and UMBC’s second-ever home game vs. an Ivy League opponent (Princeton, 2003-04).
In addition to hosting Morgan State, Loyola, and Coppin State, the Retrievers face local rivals Towson (Wed., Dec. 2) and 2009 NCAA Tournament participant American (Sat., Dec. 19) on the road in non-conference action. Highlighting the other road contests are trips to 2009 NIT champion Penn State (Tue., Dec. 8) and to ACC rising power Virginia Tech (Tue., Dec. 22).
“It’s a very competitive non-conference schedule for our young group,” Monroe said. “It’s great to play so many of the local teams and I’m sure that will generate a great deal of fan interest early in the season.”
UMBC has made back-to-back appearances in the America East title game, winning the league championship in 2008 vs. and finishing as the runner-up last season. Only two players on the 2009-10 pre-season roster, seniors Matt Spadafora and Justin Fry, have more than one year of collegiate experience in America East Conference competition.
