6/29/2009

Baltimore, Md.—Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Monroe announced today that Jamar Wertz (Suffolk, Va./King’s Fork) has signed a grant-in-aid form and will attend UMBC in the fall of 2009.

The Virginia High School Coaches Association Group and the Virginia Associated Press named Wertz to the AAA Second-Team All-State boys’ basketball squad after the 2008-09 season. The six-foot-three, 185-lb. wing guard averaged 14.2 points per game last season and helped the Bulldogs (31-1) win the title of the VHSL boys’ basketball state championship. He buried 63 three-point field goals, hit 73.5 percent from the free throw line, and also averaged six rebounds and 2.3 steals per contest. Wertz was also a First-Team All-Eastern Region, First-Team All-City and a Second-Team All-Tidewater honoree.

Wertz is a three-time First-Team All-Southeastern District selection, as tabbed by The Suffolk News-Herald.  As a junior, he helped the Bulldogs to the Southeastern District tournament title and a berth in the Group AAA state tournament for the first time in the school’s young history. He was a First-Team All-Tidewater and Second-Team All-Eastern Region honoree as he averaged 17.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and three steals a game in 2007-08.

Wertz has established school career records for three-point field goals (158), free throws made (384), and points scored (1,701).
