Chauncey Gilliam Earns Fourth Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week Award

Cambridge, Mass.—Freshman wing Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md./Brewster Academy) was named America East Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 22, 2008.

Gilliam has won the award for two consecutive weeks and has earned the honor a league-high four times during the campaign. He also won the award on Dec. 29 and on Feb. 2. and has surpassed Brian Hodges for the most yearly honors. Hodges captured two awards in his freshman season of 2004-05.

The Columbia, Md. native posted back-to-back double-doubles this week, scoring 18 points and corralling 10 rebounds vs. Vermont on Feb. 17 and adding 17 points and 10 caroms at Rider on Feb. 21. The 10 rebounds represented a season high for Gilliam. He had a streak of six consecutive 3-pt. field goals made, which ended at Rider, but he has still hit seven of his last 10 shots from behind the arc and is 13 of 27 for the season. 

Gilliam’s current total of 294 points (10.8 points per game) is the tenth-most for a freshman in school history and the most since Peter Mulligan had a school record 450 in the 2000-01 season. He has scored in double figures in nine of his last 12 games and is fourth in the America East Conference in field goal percentage at 54.1%.
