Men's Basketball Squanders Halftime Lead, Falls at Rider, 71-65
Lawrenceville, N.J.óSenior forward Darryl Proctor scored a game-high 23 points, but UMBC (12-15) led a halftime lead slip for the second straight game and fell to the Rider Broncs (16-11), 71-65, in an ESPNU BracketBusters game.
Rider led, 66-63, in the final minute but UMBC had a chance to tie the game down the stretch after Proctor rebounded the miss of a jump shot. He drove down the floor, but had the ball stolen from behind with 48 seconds remaining and Riderís Novar Gadson hit two free throws after Greene committed a foul. After another UMBC missed shot, Mansell sealed the win with two free throws to put Rider ahead, 70-63 with 28 seconds remaining.
Freshman wing Chauncey Gilliam added 17 points and posted his second consecutive double-double with 10 rebounds. For the second straight game, Proctor and Gilliam recorded double-doubles as Proctor garnered a game-high 11 caroms.
UMBC led for most of the first half, but the largest margin was just six points at 34-28 after Gilliamís three-point field goal with 2:30 left in the half.
UMBC had won 21 straight games when leading at intermission, but dropped two straight this week.
The Retrievers return to league play on Thursday, Feb. 26 when they travel to Binghamton.
