Men's Basketball To Compete in ESPNU Bracketbusters Event in Saturday Matinee at Rider
The UMBC Retrievers (12-14, 6-8 America East) compete in their first ESPNU Backetbusters event as they face Rider (15-11, 10-6 MAAC) in Lawrenceville, N.J. on Saturday, Feb. 21. The game can be heard on Fox 1370 Sports. (www.fox1370.com) (Paul Mittermeier). Rider will compete at the RAC Arena in Nov. and Dec. of 2009.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC saw its season-long three-game winning streak halted on Tuesday, when they fell at home to league-leading Vermont, 77-65. UMBC lost for the firs time this season (7-1) when leading at halftime. . Senior guard Jay Greene and freshman wing Chauncey Gilliam were named America East Conference Men’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week respectively, for the week ending Feb. 15, 2008. Gilliam followed up with his first career double-double (18 pts., 10 rebs. ) vs. the Catamounts.
BRONC UPDATE: Rider snapped a brief two-game slide in Wednesday’s thrilling 90-87 win over second-place (MAAC) Niagara. Harris Mansell led the Broncs with 22 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with six seconds remaining. Junior forward Ryan Thompson leads RU with 17.5 points per games. In the only match-up against common opponents this season, Rider lost at Binghamton, 69-58.
Who’s Up Next: UMBC returns to America East play on Thursday, Feb. 26 when they travel to Binghamton for a match-up with the Bearcats. UMBC won the earlier meeting, 84-78 at the RAC Arena.
