Men's Basketball Faces First Road Test of League Season; Travels to UNH for Wednesday Showdown With Wildcats

1/13/2009

  • UMBC at New Hampshire, '09

UMBC (7-7, 1-1 America East) plays its first America East away contest of the year when they travel to Durham, N.H. to take on the New Hampshire Wildcats (5-8, 1-1).  Beginning with this contest, UMBC will play eight times in the next 20 days. The game can be heard on the new FOX1370 Sports Radio (www.fox1370.com) with Steve Levy  handling the broadcast.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC snapped a two-game losing streak and two-game home slide with a 61-59 win over Maine on Saturday. The Retrievers built a pair of 11-point second half leads, but just held on as Maine missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Senior forward Darryl Proctor just earned a share of the America East Player of the Week honors. He leads UMBC with 19.6 ppg and 8.9 rpg and is averaging 27.0 ppg in his last three outings.

WILDCAT UPDATE: UNH had won two straight in impressive fashion before Sunday’s 68-37 loss at Boston University. After victories over Santa Clara (58-54) and Hartford (55-47), the Wildcats missed 31 of 33 shots from behind the arc vs. the Terriers and fell to 1-6 away from Lundholm Gym. Sophomore guard Alvin Abreu (12.8) and senior guard Tyrece Gibbs (12.7) lead a balanced UNH attack.

After dropping five of six in the series, UMBC has captured three of the last four meetings, including a series sweep last season. The Wildcats hit 29 three-point field goals in two games vs. UMBC last season, including tying a Retriever opponent record with 16 in the Feb. 23 contest. That 71-68 UMBC win in overtime clinched the America East regular season title for the Retrievers.
