UMBC's Cavell Johnson Earns Second America East Player of the Week Honors

12/26/2007

Cavell Johnson became the fourth Retriever player to earn the conference honors so far this season.

Cambridge, Mass.—UMBC senior forward Cavell Johnson (Fort Washington, Md./Notre Dame Acad./James Madison) earned America East Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week honors for the week ending Dec. 23, 2007. It is the second top honor of the season for Johnson, who also captured the award on Nov. 19, and the fourth of the season for the 8-4 Retrievers.

Johnson recorded his third double-double of the season with 19 points and a career-high tying 15 rebounds in Saturday’s 83-65 win over MEAC pre-season favorite Hampton. He also rejected four shots and is the America East Conference leader in both rebounds (8.8) and blocked shots (2.1) per game. Johnson is also tenth in the conference in scoring (14.3 ppg) and field goal percentage (48.3%).

Senior guard Ray Barbosa (Allentown, Pa.) and junior guard Jay Greene (Whitehall, Pa.) have also won the award this season.

The Retrievers return to the practice court on Dec. 26 in preparation for Saturday’s game at 2007 national finalist Ohio State.
