Men's Basketball: Former St. John's Guard Ricky Torres to Transfer to UMBC

Baltimore, Md. –Ricky Torres has signed a grant-in-aid letter and will transfer to UMBC, Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Monroe announced today.

Torres is a 6-foot-5, 222-lb. guard who competed at St. John’s (N.Y.) University in 2005-06 and 2006-07. The Bronx, N.Y. native will have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2008-09 season.

The 2005 second team All (N.Y.) City honoree competed in 50 games over two seasons for the Red Storm. As a freshman, he averaged 6.9 points per game in the final seven games of the season, including a career-high 12 points vs. DePaul on Feb. 18, 2006.  Last season, he posted a season-high 11 points in a 13-minute stint vs. Maryland on Nov. 16, hitting four of five shots from the floor and two of three from behind the arc. The next night vs. No. 18 Texas, he hit all three shots from three-point range, scoring nine points in a tough 77-76 loss to the Longhorns.

Torres was a three-year varsity letter-winner at St. Raymond’s High School. He was rated a top 100 prospect by several recruiting publications as he averaged 18.0 points per game as a senior, shooting 43.0 percent from the floor and 39 percent from long range.  Torres was a second team all-league selection in the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and a second team all-city honoree by the Daily News, New York Post and Newsday.
