Marcos Tamares Signs National-Letter-of-Intent in Men's Basketball

UMBC Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Monroe announced the signing of Marcos Tamares to a national-letter-of-intent.

 

Tamares, a native of Queens, N.Y., is a 6-foot-6 1/2 forward who attended St. Mary's High School in Manhasset, N.Y. and played for head coach Robert Jones.

Tamares finished the 2006-07 season averaging 15.0 points a game. He also had 10.1 rebounds and over three blocks per contest as a senior. He earned All Catholic High School Athletic Association  and All (Nassau) County honors while playing both swingman and post positions.

The future Retriever earned All Tournament Team honors this season at the Punahou Tournament in Hawaii and the Bay Ball Classic in Delaware. He led a young Gaels’ team to the NSCHSAA “AA” title game.

Former Retriever Andre Williams (‘02) also attended St. Mary’s.

Tamares joins Frank McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) as freshmen on the 2007-08 UMBC squad. McKnight, a six-foot, 170-lb. guard averaged 15.0 points and six assists per game for the Pennsylvania District I Class AA champions.
