Brian Hodges Named America East Men's Basketball Player of the Week

12/11/2006

UMBC junior guard Brian Hodges (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) was named America East Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 10. Hodges is UMBC’s second honoree in the past three weeks, as sophomore guard Jay Greene (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) earned the honors for the week ending Nov. 26.

Hodges keyed UMBC’s huge second half as the Retrievers knocked off Atlantic 10 foe La Salle, 78-67 on Thursday, Dec. 7. He hit four of seven shots from the floor (1/1 3-pt. fg) and all six free throw attempts to score 15 of his game-high 22 points in the final 20 minutes. Hodges added three assists, three steals and three rebounds.  The Retrievers outscored La Salle 20-0 over a 9:26 span in the second half and built a 62-37 lead with 4:42 remaining.

It was UMBC’s first win over an Atlantic 10 school since a 1988-89 triumph over George Washington. The Retrievers had lost six straight contests to A-10 schools and, with the win, UMBC improved to 3-3 on the road on the campaign.

Hodges has averaged 20.6 ppg in UMBC’s last five games, and is now eighth in the conference in scoring at 13.6 ppg, despite playing less than 23 minutes per game. He has come off the bench in five of UMBC’s last six games and has moved into sixth place in school history with 115 three-point field goals.
