Pugh's 21 Points, 10 Rebounds Lead Men's Basketball to 56-49 Win over Hampton

Hampton, Va.—Senior guard Chris Pugh scored a career high 21 points and also garnered a career-best 10 rebounds as visiting UMBC (1-2) edged Hampton (1-3), 56-49 in the Pirates’ home opener.

 

It was Pugh’s first career double-double as he hit six of 10 shots from the floor, seven of eight from the free throw line and added four steals.

 

UMBC forced 16 Hampton turnovers in the first half and the Pirates missed 21 of 26 shots as the Retrievers forged ahead, 25-14 at intermission. But Hampton hit four of its first six shots in the second half and crept back to within a point at on a jumper by Rashad West with 8:08 remaining.

 

But Retriever forward Mike Housman hit two free throws, Thomas Young scored on a driving layup and Chris Seaborn capped the surge with a slam dunk as UMBC went back ahead by seven points at 41-34 with 5:44 remaining. After Hampton’s Demario Mattox hit a pair of free throws, Retriever guard Jay Greene hit a driving layup and Pugh drove the lane the converted on a conventional three-point play to provide the visitors with a 46-36 advantage with 3:49 to play.

 

 Seaborn added two baskets down the stretch to keep Hampton at bay as UMBC snapped a nine-game road losing streak.

 

In addition to Pugh’s heroics, Greene added 11 points, Seaborn was a perfect four-of-four from the floor (eight points) and Young, in his first collegiate start, had seven rebounds and a game-high five assists.

 

UMBC hit 10 of its final 16 shots from the floor and were at 43.6 percent (17/39) for the game. They committed 24 turnovers, but none in the final five minutes of play. The Retrievers outrebounded the Pirates, 38-32 and held the hosts to 27.3 percent (15/55) shooting.

 

The Retrievers return home to face Lafayette on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live by MASN.
