UMBC MEN’S BASKETBALL TESTS VIRGINIA IN 77-66 LOSS WEDNESDAY NIGHT

    Brian Hodges tallied 23 points with a career-high six three-point baskets on Wednesday.

    Richmond, Va. – The UMBC men’s basketball team (4-7) dropped a 77-66 decision to the University of Virginia (5-4) on Wednesday night at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.  UMBC tallied 12 three-point baskets in the game, finishing one trey shy of the school record. 

     

    UMBC jumped out to a 17-12 lead by the 11:24 mark but was outscored by the Cavaliers 21-13 as UVA took a 33-30 lead at the end of the first stanza.

     

    UMBC came out of the break making its first three three-point baskets, including Brian Hodges hitting one of his six treys in the game at the 14:37 mark to give UMBC a 41-40 lead.

     

    The Cavaliers went back on top and held a 60-53 advantage until back-to-back three-point baskets by John Zito and Hodges closed the lead to 60-59 with 6:55 to play. 

     

    The Cavaliers responded with a 7-0 run and behind 13-of-14 shooting at the free throw line in the second half held off the Retrievers for the 11-point victory.

     

    Hodges finished with a season-high 23 points for UMBC with a career-high six three-point baskets.  Jay Greene tallied 12 points, making 4-of-8 from outside the arc.  Mike Housman led UMBC with eight rebounds while scoring eight points. 

     

    J.R. Reynolds led the Cavaliers in scoring with a team-high 20 points.  Virginia shot 48.1 (26-for-54) percent from the field compared to a 41.7 (25-for-60) field goal percentage by UMBC.
