MEN'S HOOPS SEASON ENDS WITH 76-61 QUARTER FINAL LOSS TO TOP-SEEDED VERMONT

3/5/2005

Vermont’s Taylor Coppenrath poured in 33 points and teammate T.J. Sorrentine added 20 as the top-seeded Catamounts (22-6) eliminated UMBC (11-18), 76-61, in the quarter-final round of the America East Tournament.

The Retrievers hung in with the Catamounts until early in the second half. UMBC took its final lead, as senior guard Rob Gogerty capped an 8-1 run with a jumper to give the Retrievers a 21-20 advantage at the 9:37 mark of the first half. But UVM’s Alex Jensen and Sorrentine hit treys on the next two possessions and the Catamounts would never look back.

Vermont led, 41-33 at the break and UMBC was still within 50-40 with 15:07 remaining. But Sorrentine led a 17-3 charge which gave the Catamounts a 67-43 advantage and UMBC could not stage a late game rally.

Freshman guard Brian Hodges, who scorched UNH for 28 points in UMBC’s first round win, led UMBC with 14 points, but he managed to hit just 2 of 7 from behind the arc. Sophomore guard Chris Pugh was the other Retriever in double figures with 11 points on 4 of 4 shooting.

Vermont hit 10 of 23 shots from three-point range, and were 18 of 21 from the charity stripe.
