HODGES NAMED AMERICA EAST CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

2/28/2005

For the second time this season, freshman guard Brian Hodges (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) has been named co-America East Conference Rookie of the Week. Hodges also won the award on January 24.

Hodges has averaged 13.8 ppg in his four starts (the last four games) for the Retrievers. He led UMBC in scoring in both contests last  week and has led the Retrievers in scoring on seven occasions in his first season, just one behind Andrew Feeley’s 8. Hodges scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half vs. Vermont as UMBC took a 40-32 halftime lead and scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half vs. Hartford as the Retrievers overcame a 3-point halftime deficit and won, 68-58. Hodges’ team-leading 44 trifectas is the most for a UMBC freshman since a pair of Retrievers (Rich Giddens, 80, Terence Ward, 63) had brilliant rookie campaigns from behind the arc in the 1997-98 season.

Hodges is averaging 8.3 points per game on the season and 9.1 in league games.
