ALBANY SHOOTS WAY PAST UMBC MEN’S BASKETBALL AS RETRIEVERS FALL 76-62

2/19/2005

Mike Housman tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday.

Albany, N.Y. - The University at Albany (13-12, 9-7 AE) shot 52.3 percent from the floor on 23-of-44 as they defeated the UMBC Retrievers (9-16, 4-12 AE) by a final of 76-62 in America East Men’s Basketball action at the Recreation and Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.  Four Retrievers hit double figures including Mike Housman with a double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds.

UMBC shot 36.2 percent from the field on 21-of-58 and failed to do their job at the free throw line going 13-of-25 compared to 23-of-33 at the charity stripe by the Great Danes.  UAlbany led 13-11 midway through the first half, but then tallied 14 of the game's next 16 points.  Brent Wilson scored five in that stretch, including a three-point field goal from the top of the arc that gave his club a 27-13 advantage as they went into the half with a 33-21 lead.

The Retrievers, who won this year's first meeting, 67-62, back on Jan. 19th, would hang within striking distance until the final two minutes behind the play of Mike Housman, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Rob Gogerty, one of four UMBC players in double figures with 11 points, made three consecutive free throws to close the gap to 68-60.  But UAlbany extended their margin at the free throw line and took the foul-plagued contest where the teams combined for 47 personals and four technicals.

Brian Hodges tallied 11 points and Cory McJimson finished with 10 for UMBC.  Jamar Wilson scored a game-high 17 points and Wilson added 16 points off the bench for UAlbany.

UMBC’s skid extended to seven-straight with the loss.  They return to action when they travel to Vermont to face the Catamounts on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
