BRIAN HODGES NAMED AMERICA EAST MEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

1/24/2005

UMBC freshman guard Brian Hodges (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) was named America East Conference Rookie of  the Week for games played Monday, January 17-Sunday, January 23.

Hodges continues to emerge as a key component of a gritty UMBC squad. On Saturday, he drilled a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds to go to give the Retrievers a 61-59 win over Binghamton. On Wednesday, the 6’3” shooting guard led the Retrievers’ effort with 14 points (6/8 fg), including 10 in the second half, as UMBC rallied from five down at intermission to defeat Albany, 67-62 on Wednesday. Hodges is averaging 9.9 ppg over his last nine games, and has averaged 12.0 ppg in UMBC’s home conference wins. For the season, he is averaging 7.9 ppg and 3.1 rpg and leads UMBC with 23 three-point goals.

Hodges is UMBC’s third freshman to earn the conference’s Rookie of the Week honors this season. Michael Knight earned the award on December 7, 2004, and Rashad Bilal was the league’s co-recipient on January 10, 2005. The trio are combining for 19.5 points per game, nearly 30% (29.7%) of UMBC’s total offense.
