FEELEY RECORDS FOURTH "DOUBLE-DOUBLE" OF CAMPAIGN; MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS VILLA JULIE, 84-58

Senior center Andrew Feeley scored 18 points and added 10 rebounds, recording his fourth “double-double” of the year, as UMBC (3-5) snapped a two game losing streak with an 84-58 win over Villa Julie (4-4) at the RAC Arena.

 

The Mustangs, a member of the NCAA Division III, lost their third straight contest, after defeating other Maryland area Division III schools Johns Hopkins, McDaniel and St. Mary’s.

 

Feeley needed just 22 minutes to post his 13th career “double-double”, but his first at home after 12 straight on the road. He hit all eight of his free throw attempts and added a pair of blocked shots. Sophomore forward Mike Housman was the only other Retriever in double figures with a season high 10 points and he added 7 caroms.

 

The Retrievers never trailed, gradually building a 21-9 lead after freshman guard Brian Hodges connected on a three-point field goal at the 11:36 mark of the first half. UMBC led, 43-32 at intermission, as the Mustangs stayed within range by hitting 11 of 24 shots from the floor.

 

The UMBC remained at eleven points, at 58-47 with 11:44 remaining when UMBC put the game away with a 16-0 run, holding the visitors without a field goal for over 8 minutes of play.

 

Hodges added 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists for UMBC, while junior forward John Zito and freshman guard Rashad Bilal scored 8 points each. Senior guard Rob Gogerty registered 8 assists and 0 turnovers in 26 minutes, recorded the team high in minutes played.

 

Guard Steven Segears led Villa Julie with 12 points. The Mustangs hit just 7 of 24 shots in the second half and were outrebounded, 51-28, for the contest.

 

UMBC is now 15-0 against NCAA Division III opponents since entering the Division I ranks in the 1986-87 season. It was UMBC’s first game against a non-Division I opponent since December of 1999.
