MEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF TOWSON, 63-61
For the ninth straight time, UMBC defeated
The Retrievers triumphed, 63-61, before 2,361 at the RAC Arena to snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 2-3 overall.
UMBC built a seemingly comfortable 12-point cushion in the second half, leading 59-47 after a Michael Knight leaning jumper with to play. But the Tigers would stiffen defensively, and chipped away, closing to within 63-59 as Lawrence Hamm hit one of two free throws with remaining.
Missed free throws would play a huge role down the stretch, as
UMBC inbounded the ball to Cory McJimson, but he missed the front end with 16 seconds left and
Knight led UMBC with 13 points, as all nine Retrievers who saw action scored. Zito added 10 points, and McJimson and Feeley each had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Junior Seth Davis came off the bench to snare 8 caroms, as UMBC outrebounded the Tigers, 36-27. Jonathan Pease led a balanced TU attack with 13 points.
The Retrievers shot a season high 48.2% from the floor.
