RAY'S LONG DISTANCE SHOOTING PROPELS VILLANOVA OVER UMBC BASKETBALL, 66-41
11/23/2004
Villanova, PA—Junior guard Allan Ray scored a game high 23 points, including 17 in the first half, as Villanova opened their campaign with a 66-41 victory over UMBC at the Pavilion. The Retreivers dropped to 1-1 early in the campaign.
The Wildcats opened the game on a 10-0 run, on a pair of dunks and two three-point field goals by Ray. UMBC would trim the deficit to 16-7 after a John Zito three-point basket, but a 13-0 Villanova run gave the hosts a 35-11 advantage with five minutes remaining in the half. Ray (17 points) and backcourt mate Randy Foye (13) combined for 30 points as the Wildcats hit 15 of 25 from the floor and 8 of 14 from behind the arc to take a 41-16 halftime lead.
Villanova hit 10 three-point goals on the night and did not lead by less than 25 points in the second half.
Andrew Feeley led UMBC with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Rob Gogerty added 9 points and freshman Brian Hodges contributed 8. Gogerty played the first 38 minutes for UMBC.
The 41 points scored by UMBC was the fewest since they scored 43 at Maine last season. The Retrievers travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia to take on James Madison on Saturday.
