KEVIN BAGGETT NAMED ASSISTANT MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH

          Kevin Baggett has been named Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at UMBC, Head Basketball Coach Randy Monroe announced today.

Baggett has spent eight seasons as a Division I assistant coach. Most recently, he completed his second season at James Madison University. He worked from 2000-02 as an assistant coach at Howard, from 1998-2000 as an assistant at Western Kentucky and from 1996-98 as an assistant at Coastal Carolina.  He is a former scholarship basketball player at St. Joseph's and a former standout performer at the scholastic level in New Jersey.

“I have known Kevin since he was a student-athlete at St. Joseph’s, and have watched him develop at each school he has been associated with,” said Monroe. “He has a tremendous work ethic, a great knowledge of, and a great passion for the game and the young men who play it. There is no doubt in my mind that he is the right man for the job.”

The native of Burlington, New Jersey previously coached at Cinnaminson (N.J.) High School from 1991-96, where he coached the junior varsity program and was appointed varsity coach just before receiving his opportunity to coach at the collegiate level at Coastal Carolina.

The 37-year-old Baggett hopes to continue a professional trend that has seen him involved with developing programs.  Howard had winning records in each of his seasons with the program after not having had a winning season for 12 years and reached its conference tournament finals and won 18 games in his final season.  Western Kentucky reached the NCAA Tournament two years after his association with the program and proceeded to earn three straight appearances in the tournament.

“I feel that Randy Monroe is one of the best people I know in the coaching profession and I am really looking forward to working alongside him and the rest of the staff,” said Baggett. “Having played and coached in this area before, I know what a great area it is to recruit from and I think we have a great opportunity to bring some outstanding young men to UMBC.”

Baggett was a part-time starter as a player at St. Joseph’s and was a member of the Hawks’ 1985-86 team that compiled a 26-6 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He received his bachelor’s degree in marketing with a minor in sociology from St. Joseph’s in June 1989.
