GOGERTY LIFTS RETRIEVER MEN’S HOOPS TO 60-56 WIN OVER NEW HAMPSHIRE

Rob Gogerty's three-point basket with 39 seconds lifted UMBC to a 60-56 win over New Hampshire.

Durham, N.H. – Rob Gogerty scored a career-high 20 points including the final four points for the Retrievers as the UMBC guard drained a three-point basket with 39 seconds remaining in the second half to break a 56-56 tie and then added a free throw with 14 seconds on the clock to lift the UMBC men’s basketball team to a 60-56 win over New Hampshire in America East basketball action on Wednesday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.  The Retrievers move to 6-10 on the year and 3-4 in the America East while New Hampshire drops to 5-12 on the season and 1-6 in the America East.

 

The Retrievers, who ran out to a 33-22 lead in the first half on 44.0 percent shooting form the field, took a 16 point lead, their largest of the game at 16:33 in the second half as Cory McJimson converted a lay-up.  The Retrievers led 41-25 at that point.

 

UMBC would then watch their lead dissipate to one point as the Wildcats went on a 21-6 run to cut UMBC’s lead to 47-46 with 10:13 left in the second half.  The Wildcats eventually took the lead with 4:20 remaining on a three-pointer by Ioannis Karlis to take a 53-51 advantage.

 

UMBC tied the game, 56-56, on the only points by Mike Housman, who came off the bench and grabbed 10 boards in the game.  Gogerty with the score tied and under a minute to play hit the trey on an assist by Housman as UMBC survived with the 60-56 victory.

 

The Retrievers shot 38.5 percent in the game and held the Wildcats to 27.6 percent.  The Wildcats were led by Blagoj Janev with 21 points off the bench.
