BAREA LEADS NU HUSKIES PAST RETRIEVER MEN'S HOOPS, 81-62

Baltimore, MD--Northeastern super sophomore guard Jose Juan Barea led an onslaught of Huskie three-point goals as NU defeated UMBC, 81-62, in America East action at the RAC Arena. Barea his for 29 points, and the visitors made 10 of 22 from behind the arc against the normally stingy Retriever long distance defense. NU improves to 11-6 overall, 5-1 in league play, while the Retrievers lose their second straight and fall to 5-10 overall, 2-4 in the conference.
NU led the entire way, building a 30-19 lead at the 7:56 mark of the first half. The Retrievers would rally, slicing the deficit to as little as four points on two occasions, before NU settled for an 41-35 halftime edge. UMBC hung around for the first 10 minutes of the second half, as they were within 52-47 after a Seth Davis layup with 10:50 to play. But NU went on a 13-3 run, to grab a 65-50 advantage with 7:23 to go and were not threatened thereafter.
Barea hit 10 of 21 shots from the floor, and four of his five three-point goals were well behind NBA range. Javorie Wilson added 20 points, and Sylbrin Robinson had 17 for NU.
UMBC sophomore forward Cory McJimson scored a season high 20 points in his first collegiate start, as he replaced an injured John Zito in the starting lineup. Rob Gogerty added 17 points and Seth Davis contributed 13, but for the second straight game, UMBC hit less than 40% (24/61, 39.3%) from the floor.
