Recap of 2009 Retriever Club Golf Outing

7/6/2009

The 2009 winning foursome (l to r): Bill Moore, Kelly Stodter, Fred Braerman, Walt Quick

Brian Lawton (men's lacrosse, '02) capped the day with a hole-in-one on the par 3 10th hole!

The 2009 Retriever Club Golf Outing at Rolling Road GC on June 15 was a tremendous success.  Former men’s lacrosse face-off standout Brian Lawton (’02) highlighted a wonderful day of golf with his first ever hole-in-one! Lawton’s pitching wedge from the 106 yard 10th hole ended his day and the 23rd annual outing in extraordinary fashion.

“Never in my life would I have thought this would happen!” Lawton said. “I told Kevin O’Neill, who was hitting balls for each foursome that I would beat his shot any day, and it hits the flagstick and goes in! Too crazy!”

120 golfers enjoyed a spectacular day at Rolling Road Golf Club.  The tournament provides scholarship support, along with academic services assistance and facility upkeep for UMBC’s student-athletes.

Sponsors of the event included:  Enterprise Car Rental, O’Donnell Honda, WR Grace, IBM – Client Services, Retriever Aquatics, Wells Fargo Mortgage, Little Abner’s, Embroidme – Catonsville, Sign-a-Rama – Catonsville, and numerous others who contributed to the success of the event through gifts for the silent auction and other door prizes. UMBC Athletics thanks all of those who contributed.

The winning team consisted of Walt Quick, Kelly Stodter, Bill Moore, and Fred Braerman, parents of the women’s lacrosse student-athletes. Perennial champions the Wagners (Bobby Wagner, men’s soccer ’93, Bob Wagner, Todd Sloper, and Dave Wagner) placed second this year.

Check out PHIL-osophy with women's basketball coach Phil Stern as he tried to break 60 with his foursome in the tournament. The video is posted at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvEs7CMSSC4.

We look forward to the 24th edition next June!
