UMBC Department of Athletics Dedicates Michael S. Knapp Varsity Weight Room

BALTIMORE—UMBC Athletics has officially renamed its 3,000-square foot varsity weight room as the Michael S. Knapp Varsity Weight Room and has completed Phase I of renovations, Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown announced today.

“Our student-athletes have made a point of emphasis that the number one priority in improvements of our facilities was a renovation of the varsity weight room,” Dr. Brown said. “I went to Mike, who has been a friend of mine and this department for a long time, and he stepped up with a very generous donation and helped raise the additional funds from others.

“Throughout the last decade, Mike has donated to various projects for us, but his main priority was to help establish a quality training center, and with his help, we have been able to do so.”

Some of the improvements made to the facility including demolition, repair and painting of the existing walls; the addition of a new ceiling; an expanded office complex; an improved ventilation system; new rubberized floors and the purchase of new equipment.

Phase II will include new lighting, HVAC units, glass walls and replacement/additional equipment.

Knapp, a former President and CEO of Citibank, is now the Chairman of Competitive Capital Limited, a consulting firm specializing in innovative banking and finance solutions for banks, corporations and governments.
