CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The 18-player men’s and women’s ballots have each been narrowed down to five finalists, with senior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and sophomore guard Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md./Brewster Academy) still in the running.
A two-time America East All-Conference selection, Cassidy is UMBC’s all-time leader in 3-pointers with 245, tied for the second-most in America East history, and her 1,600 career points rank second all-time at UMBC and 23rd in the conference. This season, she is averaging a team-best 13.3 points per game to go along with 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest. She is coming off a 25-point, nine-rebound performance on Wednesday evening to lead the Retrievers to a remarkable 23-point come-from-behind victory over Boston University.
Gilliam leads UMBC in scoring with 13.5 points per game and is currently tied for sixth in the America East Conference with 15.3 ppg in league contests. He has scored in double figures in 12 consecutive games, and he has tallied 20 or more points six times this year, including a career-high 26 in UMBC’s win at Hartford on Feb. 11.
Final voting for the America East Men’s and Women’s Basketball Fans’ Choice Player of the Year runs through Monday, March 1, for the men and Tuesday, March 2, for the women. The men’s winner will be announced via AmericaEast.com on Tuesday, March 2, while the women’s winner will be announced in the same manner on Wednesday, March 3.
