NORTHEASTERN SHUTS OUT UMBC FIELD HOCKEY, 6-0

    Baltimore, MDJunior Mari Creatini (Auburndale, Mass./Newton North) had a game-high eight points as she scored four goals to lead twelfth-ranked Northeastern (6-3, 1-0 America East) to a 6-0 win over UMBC (1-5, 0-1 America East) in the league opener for both teams this afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

     

    Creatini scored what would be the game winner in the nineteenth minute after the Huskies were awarded a penalty corner. Creatini set up the play, then came inside just in time to receive a pass from teammate Leigh Shea (Ipswich, Mass./Bishop Fenwick), who had pushed the ball inside the circle. Freshman Natalie Singelais (Bow, N.H./Concord) added another goal 33:22 to give Northeastern a 2-0 advantage at the break.

     

    In the second half, the Huskies came out firing to score three goals in the period’s first eight minutes. UMBC would not be able to break their momentum as Creatini sealed the 6-0 victory with her fourth goal of the day at 68:13.

     

    For the game, UMBC was outshot 27-1. Junior goalkeeper Meghan Polek (Hanover, MD/Seton Keough) made 11 saves at the Retriever net.
