Baltimore, MDFor the first time since returning to the Division I level in 2000, UMBC (1-0) opened their season with a win, as the Retrievers defeated Colgate (0-1), 5-4 in overtime, this afternoon at UMBC Stadium. Sophomore attacker Katie Cutchall (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road), who had a game-high five points, scored the game-winner 2:15 into the overtime period after receiving a centering pass from freshman Julie Moore (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun).

The Colgate Raiders took an early lead when sophomore Sarah McCarthy (Harrisville, R.I./Notre Dame Academy) took a long pass from junior Kath Shelley (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Maumee Valley) and scored past UMBC keeper Meghan Polek (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) just 3:13 into the game. The Retrievers would even the score at one apiece after freshman Kristi Troster (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) shot the ball just inside the circle, and past Colgate netminder Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). Colgate would regain the lead at 24:09 after a goal by Shelley, but UMBC scored twice more to take a 3-2 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Colgate took a 4-3 lead with just 4:29 remaining, after goals by sophomore Dana Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Hill School) and junior Natalie Heller (Chaddsford, Pa./Westtown). However, UMBC’s offense did not back down as Cutchall received a short pass from junior Kristin Ramsay (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and converted it into a goal at 67:21. Despite being awarded three consecutive penalty corners in the final minute, the Retrievers were unable to score again within regulation time, thus requiring a 15-minute sudden victory overtime period.
