SIX RETRIEVERS SELECTED TO NFHCA NATIONAL ACADEMIC SQUAD

5/16/2003

Seniors Bernadette Cullen and Alycia Downs, sophomores Cecile Banas and Jen Rowe, and freshmen Tiffany Deinzer and Amanda Heinz were named to the 2002 NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad.

"I am very proud of the teams' academic achievements this fall," said head coach Kristy Hartman. "The six student athletes should be very proud of not only their significant contributions on the field, but also their stellar academic performance.  Their leadership & commitment to excellence in the classroom is the reason UMBC field hockey has earned a solid reputation for being a very academic team."

Both Cullen and Downs also received the honor in 2000 and 2001, while Rowe made it her second consecutive year on the squad.

Since UMBC added field hockey as a Division I program in 2000, the Retrievers have received the recognition 14 times. Each year, more UMBC student-athletes receive the honor, as there were three recipients in 2000, five in 2001, and six in 2002.
