FIELD HOCKEY WINS FIRST WITH 1-0 WIN OVER SHU

9/23/2001

The Retriever field hockey team won its first contest since re-entering Division I competition a year ago with a thrilling 1-0 victory over NEC rival Sacred Heart at UMBC Stadium. UMBC (1-4, 1-1 NEC) would scored the game's lone goal and their first of the season with 19:27 remaining in the game, as freshman attacker Kristin Ramsay converted a centering pass from sophomore midfielder Alycia Downs. The Lady Pioneers threatened to tie the score, but UMBC netminder Karalyn Krieger made a brilliant save with 4 seconds remaining to preserve the win. Krieger had four saves to gain her first-ever shutout. UMBC returns to action with a Wednesday contest at NEC member Siena.
