9/4/2002

Baltimore, MD- For the first time since entering Division I play, the UMBC Retrievers began their season with a victory. Sophomore forward Kristin Ramsay (Our Lady of Good Counsel/ Rockville, MD) scored both Retriever goals as UMBC (1-0) downed Georgetown (0-3), 2-1. The game winner came with only 1:24 left in the game as sophomore Rebecca Schaller (Leonardtown/Leonardtown, MD) was able to get a pass across to Wendy Ison (Chesapeake/Pasadena, MD) on the right side of the net. Ison then deflected the ball over to Ramsay on the left for the goal. Ramsay had also scored earlier in the half to break the scoreless tie. With less than 14 minutes remaining in the game, Georgetown was able to even the contest at one apiece after freshman forward Jessica Quinn (Lincoln School/Cumberland, RI) scored off a rebound from teammate Shelby Samperton (Georgetown Visitation/Bethesda, MD). For the game, both teams took five shots, but the Hoyas had more penalty corners, 7-3. 1 2 FGeorgetown 0 1 1UMBC 0 2 2 Goals: GU- Quinn, 56:02 UMBC- Ramsay (Ison), 41:42; Ramsay (Schaller, Ison), 68:36Saves: GU- Herring (70 min., 2 saves, 2 goals allowed) UMBC- Polek (70 min., 1 save, 1 goal allowed)
