UMBC FIELD HOCKEY DROPS FIRST TWO GAMES OF 2001 SEASON
9/8/2001
Baltimore, MD—Returning for their second season in Division I play, the UMBC Field Hockey team showed improvement, but still came up short as they lost to West Chester, 2-0. The Golden Rams’ goals, both of which came in the second half, were scored by senior Lindsay Gordon and junior Erin Carr. Playing the very next day vs. NEC champion Rider, UMBC dropped a 4-0 decision to the Broncs. UMBC, who suffered a 6-0 defeat to the Rams last season, played strong and recorded three shots within the first few minutes. No one found the back of the net, however, and a scoreless tie remained until the half-time mark. West Chester dominated the second half as Gordon took a pass from junior midfielder Jill Posen and shot it past Retriever goalkeeper Karalyn Krieger. Less than twenty minutes later, the Rams’ Carr would do the same with a Stacey Tomes pass. For the game, West Chester outshot UMBC, 19-3, and recorded more penalty corners, 18-1. Krieger anchored the UMBC defense, stopping a total of eight shots, while Joelle Maguire had one save for the visiting Rams.Against the homestanding Broncs, UMBC allowed three first half scores and one goal in the second stanza. Rider scored just 3:20 into the game, and outshot the Retrievers, 33-2. Krieger made 16 saves in the UMBC cage.
