UMBC FIELD HOCKEY ENDS SPRING SEASON WITH WIN OVER DREXEL, 1-0

4/24/2002

The Retriever field hockey team ended the spring season on a positive note by defeating Drexel, 1-0, on April 21 at the University of Delaware Tournament. Freshman Kristin Ramsay was able to score the winning goal by lifting the ball over the Dragons' keeper and into the far right corner of the net, concluding a strong offensive push by UMBC. "The outstanding play of our defense diffused several key Drexel scoring opportunities," said Head Coach Kristy Hartman. "Their hard work allowed the midfield to keep pushing the ball up the field, and eventually gave the attack an opportunity to put the ball in the net."The team was coming from tough losses to three perennially strong women's club teams and a 1-1 tie against the Baltimore Field Hockey Association. However, they regrouped and the positive attitude paid off as UMBC capitalized on offensive passing sequences, which has been the team's strength this spring. Prior to the win over Drexel, the Retrievers were also able to hold University of Delaware to a 0-0 tie. "The success of UMBC field hockey against such solid programs as Delaware and Drexel shows how hard the athletes have been working this spring," said Hartman. "They have learned to play at the level necessary to challenge and defeat the stronger conference teams next fall."
