UMBC Field Hockey Drops Season Finale, 9-1, to New Hampshire

    Courtney McNamara scored the Retrievers' lone goal of the game.

    Baltimore-The UMBC field hockey team (1-14, 0-5 America East) fell, 9-1, to America East Conference rival New Hampshire (3-15, 1-4 America East) in the season finale Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

     

    Cally Cookie put the Wildcats on the board early, converting a feed from teammate Megan Shea just 6:07 into the game. About eight minutes later, Shea scored one of her own, poking in a shot by teammate Emily Colton for a 2-0 lead.

     

    New Hampshire then scored three goals over a span of about three and a half minutes beginning at the 21:22 mark when Colton scored on a penalty shot. At 23:11, Colton got the rebound of her own shot and sent it to the back of the cage for a 4-0 advantage, then the Wildcats were awarded an own goal when a UMBC player tipped the ball into the cage while trying to make a stop.

     

    Jen Mooney added one more before halftime, poking in a rebounded shot to give UNH a 6-0 lead at intermission.

     

    Colton scored her third and final goal of the day less than five minutes into the second half. Gabby Cafone scored at 51:35, and Mackenzie Granger at 61:55 to complete the Wildcats’ scoring.

     

    Down 9-0 with less than three minutes remaining, the Retrievers were awarded a penalty corner, which they executed perfectly. Junior forward Jessica Smith sent the ball to stopper Emily Smith, who set up a goal by sophomore defender Courtney McNamara, her first of the season. The goal put UMBC on the board and made the final score 9-1.

     

    Retriever goalies Ashley Benitez and Kat Tag split time in the cage for UMBC. Benitez made six saves and allowed five goals in 37:22 of play, while Tag stopped seven shots and allowed four goals in 32:38 of action. New Hampshire keeper Margaux Shute recorded seven saves and allowed one goal. UMBC freshman Tasha Klares also picked up the first defensive save of her career, while Anita Anastasi notched one for UNH.

     

    The Wildcats out-shot the Retrievers, 25-14, but the teams were even in penalty corners with six apiece.

     

    Before the game, the Retrievers celebrated Senior Day and honored senior tri-captains Julie Moore, Kristi Troster and Rebekah Krolus, who were playing their final career game in a UMBC uniform.
