Field Hockey Falls at Maine, 2-0

    Orono, Maine-The UMBC field hockey team was blanked for the fourth straight game, 2-0, by America East foe Maine Sunday afternoon. The Retrievers fall to 1-13 on the season and 0-4 in conference play, while the Black Bears improve to 7-9 overall and 3-1 in league action.

     

    Maine took a 1-0 lead at 22:20 when Erin Reusch passed the ball near the end line and found Kim MacDonald on the far post of the goal. MacDonald beat UMBC goalie Ashley Benitez to give the Back Bears the 1-0 lead. Maine took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

     

    At 67:36, Gina Legge scored off a penalty corner to put the Black Bears up by the final score of 2-0. Nichole Emery started the play and found Katie Flaherty, who set the ball.

     

    Benitez made 13 saves and allowed two goals in 70 minutes in the cage for the Retrievers. Black Bear goalie Rebecca Giroux made three saves to record her third shutout of the season.

     

    Maine out-shot UMBC, 23-4, and held a 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

     

    The Retrievers conclude their season Saturday, Oct. 28, when they host America East rival New Hampshire at 12 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
