Baltimore-The UMBC field hockey team (1-11, 0-3 America East) dropped its sixth straight with a 4-0 loss to America East rival and 22nd-ranked Albany (8-4, 3-0 America East) Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers were shut out for the second straight game by a nationally ranked opponent.

Teska Koch opened the scoring for the Great Danes with an unassisted goal at the 6:37 mark, the first of her two tallies on the day. The score remained 1-0 for most of the first half before Michelle Simpson, the America East’s leading scorer, poked in a deflection at 32:10. Arlette Westdorp was credited with the assist. Albany took a 2-0 lead into halftime

Koch struck again at 42:15, assisted by Michele Polizois. The Great Danes held their 3-0 lead for much of the rest of the game, but with less than nine minutes remaining, Nicole Savage knocked in a rebound of a shot off UMBC junior goalie Ashley Benitez’s pads for the 4-0 victory.

Benitez totaled seven saves in 70 minutes, while Albany keeper Ashley Ross recorded six in 63:35 before being relieved by Barb Czaplinski, who did not face a shot in the final 6:25 of play.

The Great Danes out-shot the Retrievers, 12-7, but UMBC held a 9-5 advantage on penalty corners.

The Retrievers return to the field Wednesday, Oct. 18, when they host the University of Pennsylvania at 3:30 p.m. in non-conference action at UMBC Stadium.
