Allyson Carter tallied UMBC's lone goal on Sunday.

UMBC field hockey (1-7) lost by a final score of 4-1 to Rider (6-2) in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.  Allyson Carter scored UMBC’s lone goal of the game.

Rider jumped on UMBC early with five quick shots that led up to the first goal of the game for the Broncs’.  At the 4:12 mark, Heather Connelly corralled a pass from Ashley Boulden five yards out on the right side of the net, firing a shot to the inside of Retriever netminder Ashley Benitez and into the goal for the first score of the game.

Connelly struck again before the end of the half but not before Stephanie Durante padded the Broncs’ lead with an unassisted goal at the 16:42 mark.  Durante, after a failed shot by teammate Tricia Crotty, gathered the ball on the left side of the net and deposited the rebound in the goal to make it 2-0 in favor of Rider.

With under a minute left in the half, Crotty shipped a pass to Connelly about three yards out as Connelly notched her second marker of the game at the 34:10 mark to give the Broncs’ a 3-0 lead after one half of play.

Carter opened up the scoring in the second half for the Retrievers as she notched a goal off a pass from Mary Strain at 43:49.  Strain drove down the left side of the field and shipped a pass to a hard charging Carter, who deflected the shot in for the Retrievers.

Less than five minutes later, Crotty scored again for the Broncs’ as she slipped one past Retriever goalkeeper Kat Tag at the 48:11 mark.

Tag recorded six saves for the day in 42:43, while Benitez recorded six in 27:17.

The Broncs outshot the Retrievers 20-10, but the Retrievers held an 8-2 advantage on penalty corners.

The Retrievers continue play at home next Tuesday, Sept. 26 as they take on Georgetown at 3:30 p.m. before opening conference play on Saturday, Oct. 30 against Vermont.
