UMBC Field Hockey Falls to St. Joseph’s, 5-0

9/2/2006

  • Box Score

Goalie Kat Tag recorded a career-high 12 saves against St. Joe's.

Philadelphia-St. Joseph’s scored just over a minute into the game, and that would be all the Hawks (2-0) would need in a 5-0 field hockey victory against UMBC (0-2) Saturday afternoon. The Hawks tallied four times in the second half to put the Retrievers away.

Theresa Barbati got St. Joseph’s on the board at the 1:19 mark, converting a pass from Maureen Casserly. The Hawks took 14 shots in the first half, but UMBC senior goalie Kat Tag recorded six saves in the period to keep her team in the game, as St. Joseph’s lead was only 1-0 at halftime.

After a scoreless 10 minutes to open the second half, Nicole Antonini scored twice in less than two minutes, once unassisted and once on a feed from Laura Luft to give the Hawks a 3-0 advantage. Luft added a goal of her own less than two minutes later, at 49:25, on an assist from Brianne Miller, then scored again at 56:27 to close out the scoring.

Tag totaled a career-high 12 saves in 70 minutes in the cage, while St. Joseph’s goalie Rebecca Cunter stopped one UMBC shot in 61 minutes. Gabriella Shrier finished the game in the cage for the Hawks and did not record a save.

St. Jospeh’s out-shot UMBC, 29-2, and held a 4-2 advantage on penalty corners. It is the second time in as many games that the Retrievers have been shut out and only managed two shots.

The Retrievers return to action Friday, Sept. 8, at Fairfield.
