UMBC FIELD HOCKEY DROPS SEASON OPENER, 4-0, TO WEST CHESTER

West Chester, Pa.-The UMBC field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to West Chester Saturday afternoon in both teams’ home openers. Sara Conrad scored twice for the Golden Rams.
Conrad scored the first and last goals for West Chester, putting the Golden Rams on the board just 3:57 into the game. Shelly Brooks put West Chester up 2-0 on an unassisted score with just less than 12 minutes left in the opening period, then Sarah Mizenko made it 3-0 7:30 into the second half. Conrad closed out the scoring four minutes later on an assist from Jackie Eddy.
UMBC senior goalie Kat Tag posted 11 saves and allowed three goals in 57:26 of play before giving way to junior Ashley Benitez, who allowed on goal and stopped one shot in the final 12:34. West Chester freshman Joelle Zarefoss picked up her first career win while recording one save in 58:36.
West Chester out-shot the Retrievers, 16-2, and held an 11-3 advantage on penalty corners. Both of UMBC’s shots were taken by senior Julie Moore.
The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Sept. 2, as they head to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph’s at 1 p.m.
