UMBC HIRES LAUREN FUCHS AS HEAD FIELD HOCKEY COACH

1/31/2006

Baltimore, Md.-Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown today announced the hiring of Lauren Fuchs as the head field hockey coach at UMBC, making her the second head coach in the program’s six-year history.

“I’m very excited for the challenge of working with the UMBC field hockey team to make this program successful and competitive in the America East Conference,” Fuchs said.

Most recently, Fuchs has coached the South Jersey Devils Under-19 club team since August. Fuchs had spent the last 12 years at Temple University, where she became the second-winningest coach in program history. She led the Owls to the Atlantic-10 Tournament nine times, including a conference championship in 1994. That season she was named A-10 Coach of the Year.

Prior to Temple, Fuchs spent six years in the America East as an assistant coach at both Northeastern and New Hampshire. She has been coaching at the collegiate level since 1981, when she joined her alma mater, University of Connecticut, as an assistant coach after graduating. She also served as an assistant softball coach for the Huskies in 1984.

In addition, Fuchs has also served as a United States Olympic Development Program coach since 1986, and she was named United States Olympic Committee National Field Hockey Coach of the Year in 1998. A USFHA Level One coaching education instructor, Fuchs has been the head coach of the regional USFHA summer league team for the last eight years. She has also been the head coach of the under-20 national team and the futures program, as well as an assistant coach with the under-23 national team, and she coordinates U.S. Olympic Development tryouts.

Fuchs was a four-year starter and All-American at Connecticut, leading the Huskies to post-season play each year, and she served as team captain her senior season. She also was a four-year starter and All-Regional softball player at Connecticut, and she captained that team as a senior as well.

“We’re ecstatic about Lauren accepting the position,” Dr. Brown said. “To be able to attract someone with her outstanding background as a player and coach at the Division-I level means a lot to this program. She knows a great deal about the America East from working as an assistant coach at Northeastern and New Hampshire.”

Fuchs graduated from Connecticut in 1981 with a Bachelor’s degree in physical education.
