Amanda Heinz scored the game-winner against Georgetown.

Washington, D.C.-The UMBC field hockey team (3-12) scored two unanswered goals in the second half and went on to a 2-1 victory over local rival Georgetown (3-12) Wednesday afternoon at Kehoe Field. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Retrievers, while the Hoyas have lost six in a row.

Colleen Fredericks opened the scoring for Georgetown just 7:49 into the game, converting a pass from Maggie Farrand, and the Hoyas took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

But freshman attack Paige Hartman (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) knotted the game at 1-1 at the 48:29 mark with her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Less than five minutes later, at the 52:50 mark, senior midfielder Amanda Heinz (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) scored her second goal of the year off a penalty corner for the eventual game-winner. Junior midfielder Julie Moore (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) was credited with the assist.

Sophomore goalie Ashley Benitez (Sykesville, Md./Century) notched one save and allowed one Hoya goal in the first half before junior Kathryn Tag (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace/U.S. Merchant Marine Academy) took over and recorded one save. Georgetown keeper Deirdre Crovo stopped six Retriever shots and allowed both goals.

The teams were even with 11 shots apiece, but Georgetown held an 8-2 advantage on penalty corners.

The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Oct. 29, when they travel to conference foe New Hampshire for their season finale. Game time is 1 p.m.
