FIELD HOCKEY HOSTS MAINE SATURDAY FOR AMERICA EAST PLAY ON SENIOR DAY

Tiffany Deinzer is one of four seniors who will be honored before Saturday's game against Maine.

Baltimore, Md.-The UMBC field hockey team (2-11, 0-3 America East) wraps up its home schedule on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 3:30 p.m. at UMBC Stadium, hosting conference rival Maine.

 

The Black Bears (10-5, 3-0 America East) are tied with Boston University for tops in the league as the only remaining teams who are undefeated in conference action. Maine has won two in a row and four of its last five games. Freshman Kim MacDonald leads the Black Bears with seven goals, four assists and 18 points. Goalie Rebecca Giroux has recorded two shutouts and is third in the conference with a 2.11 GAA.

 

As is tradition on a team’s final home game of the season, the Retrievers will honor their four seniors – attack Katie Cutchall (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road), defender Tiffany Deinzer (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito), attack Sara Gray (Severn, Md./Meade) and midfielder Amanda Heinz (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) – in a pre-game ceremony.

 

Moving Up the Ranks

With a goal in Saturday’s 5-3 loss to Albany, junior midfielder Julie Moore (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun), UMBC’s active career scoring leader, moved into second place on the Retrievers’ all-time scoring list with 43 career points, passing Chris Marsiglia. Moore is now two behind Robi Tamargo as the Retrievers’ all-time scoring leader. Cutchall and junior attack Kristi Troster (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) are tied for fifth place all-time with 32 points, just two behind their former teammate, Kristin Ramsay.

Defenders Extraordinaire

Deinzer leads the nation with 11 defensive saves and a 0.85 DSv/game average. She registered at least one defensive save in each of the first four games of the season and had another four-game streak snapped on Sunday at Cornell. Deinzer’s 2005 total to date surpasses her three-year total of six. Freshman defender Emily Smith (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) is tied for fourth in the country with six defensive saves and tied for third with 0.46 DSv/game, while freshman Courtney McNamara (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) is tied for 12th with 0.33 DSv/game and is tied for 15th with four defensive saves.

 

Beast in the America East

Troster and freshman attack Paige Hartman (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) are tied for eighth in the America East with six goals and 0.46 goals per game, while Troster is ninth with 1.07 points per game. Cutchall is fourth in the conference with six assists and 0.46 dishes per game, while Heinz ranks with five assists and 0.38 helpers per game. Moore is third with 38 shots and 3.92 shots per game, while Cutchall ranks fourth with 2.69 shots per game. Sophomore goalie Ashley Benitez (Sykesville, Md./Century) is fourth in the league with 6.67 saves per game.

 

The Retrievers as a team rank second in the conference with 5.85 points per game, 2.08 goals per game, 1.69 assists per game and 7.69 saves per game. UMBC is also third with 11.46 shots per game.

 

Dawg Bites…

Hartman was named America East Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 9. She scored a school-record four goals in the Retrievers’ 9-3 victory over Robert Morris, tripling her season total in one game. Hartman recorded the first multi-goal game of her career against the Colonials. She is tied for the team lead with six goals and ranks second with 13 points… Troster leads the Retrievers with six goals and 14 points… Freshman attack Danielle Guldner (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) notched the first game-winning goal and multi-goal game of her career against Robert Morris… Cutchall leads the team with six assists and is third with 12 points… Sophomore attack Jessica Smith (Boonton, N.J./Morris Hills) scored the first goal of her career against the Colonials.
