RETRIEVER FIELD HOCKEY DROPS NON-CONFERENCE CONTEST, 2-0, TO CORNELL

    Ashley Benitez recorded eight saves in the Retrievers' 2-0 loss to Cornell.

    Ithaca, N.Y.-The UMBC field hockey team (2-11) was blanked by non-conference opponent Cornell (7-4), 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field.

     

    The Big Red came out of the gates scoring, as Alyssa DePaola gave Cornell a 1-0 lead just 1:31 into the game. The Retrievers had a chance to tie it up with 21 minutes left in the first half when senior attack Katie Cutchall (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) had a breakaway, but Big Red goalie Lizzie Goldblatt charged off her line and made the save.

     

    Cornell took a 1-0 lead into halftime before getting an insurance goal as Lizzie Auer converted a pass from Natalie Serle.

     

    Sophomore goalie Ashley Benitez (Sykesville, Md./Century) kept the Retrievers in the game with eight saves, while Goldblatt recorded one.

     

    The Big Red out-shot UMBC, 14-3, and held a 6-0 advantage on penalty corners.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Oct. 22, when they host America East foe Maine on Senior Day. Game time is 1 p.m.
